How Much Does Gorilla Trekking Cost?

How Much Does Gorilla Trekking Cost? Gorilla trekking in East and Central Africa is one of the most unforgettable wildlife experiences on Earth — but it comes with varying price tags depending on which country you visit and your residency status. Most of the cost is for the gorilla trekking permit, which grants you a one-hour intimate encounter with habituated mountain gorillas deep in the forest.

🇺🇬 Uganda – Best Value for Gorilla Trekking in Africa

Uganda is widely regarded as the best-value destination for mountain gorilla trekking in Africa, offering competitive permit prices and unforgettable rainforest encounters. Gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, both home to endangered mountain gorillas.

Permit costs in Uganda are tiered by nationality. Foreign non-residents pay US$800 per trek, making it more affordable than Rwanda. Foreign residents living in Uganda pay approximately US$700, while other African nationals are charged around US$500. East African Community citizens (Ugandans, Kenyans, Tanzanians, etc.) enjoy a heavily subsidized rate of about UGX 300,000 (approximately US$80).

Uganda also offers the unique gorilla habituation experience, allowing visitors to spend up to four hours with gorillas for US$1,500 for foreign non-residents, with discounted rates for regional visitors. This extended encounter makes Uganda a top choice for immersive and affordable gorilla trekking safaris.

🇷🇼 Rwanda – Premium Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Rwanda is a premium wildlife experience, and Volcanoes National Park is widely recognized for its well-organized, luxury, and tour-friendly gorilla treks. The park offers excellent infrastructure, experienced guides, and relatively accessible hiking trails, making it a top choice for high-end safari travelers.

However, Rwanda has the highest gorilla trekking permit prices in the region. Foreign non-residents pay approximately US$1,500 per person per trek. Foreign residents living in Rwanda benefit from discounted rates of around US$500, while East African Community citizens typically pay about US$200.

To encourage extended stays and regional tourism, Rwanda occasionally offers low-season discounts, reducing permits to about US$1,050 for visitors who combine gorilla trekking with other national parks. Although more expensive than neighboring countries, Rwanda’s efficiency, conservation success, and luxury safari options make it a top destination for unforgettable mountain gorilla trekking experiences

🇨🇩 Congo – Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is one of the most affordable ways to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. Most treks take place in Virunga National Park, Africa’s oldest national park. Permit prices for foreign non-residents are typically around US$400 during high season, with even lower rates offered in the low season. Special discounts for East African citizens and African residents may apply depending on the park schedule and tourism season, making Congo a budget-friendly gorilla trekking destination
