Uganda Gorilla Permit Cost

Uganda Gorilla Permit Cost 2026-2028

Uganda Gorilla Permit Cost are official government-issued documents that authorize tourists to track mountain gorillas in protected national parks. These permits are regulated by wildlife authorities in Uganda, Rwanda, and Democratic Republic of the Congo. In Uganda, gorilla trekking takes place in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, offering unique wildlife encounters.

Each permit allows visitors to spend up to one hour observing a habituated gorilla family in their natural habitat. Due to conservation efforts and high global demand, permits are limited, making early booking essential.

Uganda Gorilla Permit Cost

Gorilla permit prices in Uganda vary based on the visitor’s residency status.

  • International tourists (non-residents) pay $800 per permit,
  • while foreign residents are charged $700.
  • Travelers from other African countries pay $500,
  • East African citizens benefit from a subsidized rate of $80.

These fees apply to gorilla trekking in parks such as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. The permit cost also covers park entry fees for the day, allowing visitors to participate in additional activities like guided nature walks without incurring extra charges

Where Gorilla Trekking Takes Place

In Uganda, gorilla trekking is conducted in two  national parks:

  • Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  •  Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.

Bwindi is the most popular destination, hosting over 20 habituated gorilla families spread across four distinct sectors. Mgahinga, though smaller, offers a more intimate and equally memorable trekking experience. Because Bwindi’s sectors are widely separated, travel between them can take 3 to 7 hours. For convenience and proper planning, visitors are strongly advised to book their gorilla permits in the same sector where their accommodation is located.

Why You Should Book Early

In Uganda, gorilla permits are strictly limited to only eight visitors per habituated gorilla family per day, making them highly competitive and quickly sold out. During peak travel seasons—June to September and December to February—permits can be fully booked several months in advance, sometimes even up to a year ahead. To avoid disappointment, early reservation is strongly recommended. In contrast, the low seasons from March to May and October to November offer better availability and fewer crowds.

Despite occasional  gorilla trekking remains possible and rewarding throughout the year in destinations like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

How to Book Gorilla Permits in Uganda

Uganda Gorilla Permit Cost are issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the official body responsible for wildlife conservation. While Ugandan citizens and foreign residents can book permits directly through UWA, international travelers are encouraged to use licensed tour operators for a faster and more convenient process.

To book a permit,

  • first select your preferred travel dates,
  • then contact a reputable tour operator to check availability.
  • Once confirmed, the operator will temporarily reserve your permit while you proceed with payment via bank transfer or credit card.
  • You will also need to provide passport details, including your full name, nationality, and passport number.
  • After payment, you will receive a confirmation and a permit receipt.

Tour operators typically charge an additional $50–$100 to cover administrative and logistical services

Important Gorilla Trekking Guidelines and Travel Tips

When planning a gorilla trekking experience in Uganda, it’s important to follow key guidelines for a smooth adventure.

  • Visitors are required to attend a pre-trek briefing at 7:45 AM,
  • trekking starting around 8:30 AM in parks like Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
  • The activity may last several hours, but all trekkers are expected to exit the forest by 7:00 PM. Each gorilla group is limited to a maximum of eight visitors per day to ensure conservation and a quality experience.
  • Although sightings are not guaranteed, success rates are about 95%.

For better planning, book your permits at least 2–3 months in advance, select accommodation close to your trekking sector, and consider traveling during the low season for improved availability. Always carry valid identification and proof of residence. With proper preparation, gorilla trekking offers a truly unforgettable wildlife experience
