7-Days Gorilla Trekking Safari Rwanda & Uganda Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali, Rwanda
Your safari begins with your arrival in Kigali, Rwanda’s clean and modern capital. After being welcomed by your guide, you will transfer to your hotel for check-in. Depending on your arrival time, you may opt for a short city tour including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, a poignant and educational site reflecting Rwanda’s tragic past and inspiring recovery.
You’ll also have the chance to explore local craft markets or enjoy Rwandan cuisine at a local restaurant. Overnight in Kigali.
Day 2: Transfer to Volcanoes National Park & Village Visit
After breakfast, depart Kigali for the northwestern region of Rwanda, heading toward Volcanoes National Park, home to the iconic mountain gorillas. The 2.5-hour scenic drive takes you through rolling hills and vibrant farmlands, giving you a taste of Rwanda’s natural beauty.
Upon arrival and check-in at your lodge near the park, spend your afternoon on a cultural village tour. Visit the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Village, where former poachers and local residents share their traditions through dance, music, and storytelling. It’s a meaningful cultural exchange that supports community-based tourism.
Overnight stay near Volcanoes National Park.
Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
This is one of the most anticipated days of the tour—gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park. After an early breakfast, you’ll report to the park headquarters for a briefing before setting off into the forest with experienced rangers.
The trek can take 1 to 6 hours depending on the gorillas’ location, navigating through bamboo forests and mountainous terrain. Once you find a gorilla family, you’ll spend an awe-inspiring hour observing them in their natural habitat—watching young ones play, mothers nurture, and silverbacks lead.
Return to the lodge for lunch and relaxation. Optional afternoon activities include a guided nature walk or a visit to the Dian Fossey Research Center.
Day 4: Transfer to Uganda – Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
Today you cross the border into Uganda via the Cyanika or Katuna border posts. Enjoy scenic views of the Virunga ranges and terraced highlands as you drive into southwestern Uganda.
Arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its biodiversity and dense jungle. After check-in at your lodge, spend the evening at leisure or join a short community walk to interact with locals and learn about conservation initiatives.
Overnight in Bwindi.
Day 5: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest
After an early breakfast, prepare for your second gorilla trekking experience—this time in Bwindi. The forest is denser and more humid than Volcanoes, offering a different trekking atmosphere. You’ll be assigned one of the habituated gorilla families and begin your journey through thick undergrowth, accompanied by a ranger and porters if needed.
Once the gorillas are located, you’ll again spend a magical hour in their company. It’s a rare privilege to see these critically endangered creatures up close in their natural surroundings.
Return to your lodge, enjoy a hot meal, and rest after an exhilarating day.
Day 6: Lake Mutanda Exploration & Canoe Ride
Today, travel to the stunning Lake Mutanda, a pristine body of water surrounded by volcanic hills and lush vegetation. Spend the morning enjoying a traditional dugout canoe ride, exploring the lake’s islands and taking in the tranquil scenery.
In the afternoon, opt for a nature walk or hike up Rwamunyonyi Hill, known for its panoramic views of the Virunga Volcanoes. This is an ideal day to relax and reflect on your adventures so far.
Overnight near Lake Mutanda.
Day 7: Return to Kigali
After breakfast, begin the return journey to Kigali (Rwanda) , depending on your international departure location.
