Akagera National Park Rwanda:   A Wildlife Haven

Akagera National Park, located in the eastern part of Rwanda along the border with Tanzania, is one of Africa’s most scenic and diverse savannah parks. Established in 1934, Akagera was once much larger than it is today. Following the 1994 genocide, returning refugees settled in parts of the park, resulting in a reduction in its size and a decline in wildlife. However, a joint partnership between the Rwanda Development Board and African Parks since 2010 has led to major restoration efforts. These have included anti-poaching measures, community engagement, and the reintroduction of key species, such as lions in 2015 and black rhinos in 2017, making Akagera a “Big Five” destination.

Akagera’s landscapes are remarkably varied. The park features rolling hills, open savannah plains, swamps, and a series of lakes, the largest of which is Lake Ihema. Getting There

Akagera National Park is approximately 110 kilometers (about 2.5–3 hours’ drive) from Kigali, Rwanda’s capital. The roads are mostly paved until the park entrance at the southern gate near the town of Kayonza. While a 4×4 vehicle is recommended for navigating the park’s internal roads, it’s not essential for reaching the entrance. The park has both southern and northern gates, though the northern gate is currently an exit-only point.

For those not driving themselves, several tour operators in Kigali offer day trips or multi-day safaris, complete with transport, guides, and accommodation arrangements.
