5-Day Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking Tour – Uganda Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Entebbe – Transfer to Kibale Forest National Park

Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, your safari guide will welcome you and begin the scenic drive to Kibale Forest National Park, located in western Uganda. This park is famously known as the “Primate Capital of the World,” with the highest diversity and concentration of primates in Africa.

Enjoy the picturesque drive through tea plantations, lush countryside, and traditional Ugandan villages. Stop for lunch en route and arrive in the late afternoon at your lodge near Kibale. Settle in and enjoy views of the forest before dinner and a briefing about the next day’s chimpanzee trek.

Day 2: Chimpanzee Trekking & Bigodi Wetland Walk

After an early breakfast, head to Kanyanchu Visitor Centre for a chimpanzee trekking briefing. You’ll be guided by experienced rangers into the forest in search of habituated chimpanzee groups. The trek usually takes 2–4 hours, and once you find them, spend an hour observing their playful, social, and intelligent behavior.

After lunch, take a guided nature walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, a community-run eco-tourism project home to over 200 bird species, primates like colobus monkeys, and rich vegetation. This is a great opportunity to learn about local conservation efforts while enjoying the biodiversity of the area.

Return to your lodge for dinner and a peaceful night in the forest.

Day 3: Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After breakfast, embark on a scenic drive south to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. The drive takes you through the scenic Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park, where you may spot tree-climbing lions (optional detour, time-permitting).

Enjoy lunch along the way and arrive in Bwindi by late afternoon. Check into your forest lodge nestled in the hills and prepare for the next day’s life-changing gorilla encounter.

Day 4: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi

After an early breakfast, report to the Bwindi Park Headquarters for a gorilla trekking briefing. You’ll be assigned to a gorilla family and accompanied by professional rangers and trackers into the forest. Trekking may last 2 to 6 hours, depending on the gorilla group’s location.

Once located, spend an awe-inspiring hour observing these gentle giants—watching their family dynamics, behaviors, and interactions in their untouched habitat. This experience is often described as one of the most powerful wildlife encounters on Earth.

Return to the lodge for a well-deserved lunch and an afternoon of rest or optional cultural visit.

Day 5: Return to Entebbe or Kampala

After breakfast, begin your journey back to Entebbe or Kampala, with lunch en route. Enjoy the scenic countryside one last time, reflecting on the extraordinary primate encounters and natural wonders you’ve experienced. You’ll arrive in time for your evening flight or choose to spend a night in Entebbe
