2-Day Chimpanzee Habituation Trekking Safari Itinerary
Day 1: Transfer to Kibale Forest & Chimpanzee Tracking
Depart Kampala or Entebbe early in the morning for a scenic 5–6 hour drive to Kibale Forest in western Uganda. After arrival and lunch, you’ll head into the forest for a chimpanzee trekking excursion. Led by a Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) ranger guide, you’ll follow trails in search of chimpanzee troops, listening for their distinctive pant-hoots and rustling in the treetops. Once found, you get one hour to observe them as they groom, feed, play, and interact in their natural environment.
The forest is also home to 12 other primate species, including red colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, and grey-cheeked mangabeys, offering a rich biodiversity experience. After tracking, return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay near the park
Day 2: Chimpanzee Habituation Experience
Rise early for a full-day Chimpanzee Habituation Experience (CHEX). Unlike regular tracking, this immersive experience allows visitors to spend 4 to 6 hours with a semi-habituated chimpanzee group as they go about their day. You’ll join researchers and rangers before dawn to observe how chimps wake up, forage, socialize, and build nests for the night. It’s an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the process of habituating chimps to human presence for conservation and tourism purposes.
After a packed lunch in the forest and final observations, return to the lodge to freshen up before starting the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe, concluding the safari in the evening
This short but deeply rewarding safari offers unforgettable encounters and insight into the lives of Uganda’s iconic chimpanzees
