At Ikiya Primate Safaris, we invite you to embark on an unforgettable journey to Mount Elgon National Park, one of Uganda’s most captivating and diverse natural wonders. Nestled in the eastern part of the country, this park offers an exceptional blend of rich biodiversity, dramatic landscapes, and profound cultural heritage. Whether you’re an avid birdwatcher, a seasoned hiker, or someone seeking a serene escape, Mount Elgon promises an experience like no other

A Geological Marvel

Mount Elgon is an ancient, extinct shield volcano that once stood taller than Mount Kilimanjaro. Today, it stands at 4,321 meters, making it the fourth-highest peak in East Africa. Its expansive base, covering approximately 4,000 km², is the largest volcanic base in the world. The mountain’s gradual slopes and expansive caldera create a unique and accessible terrain for adventurers and nature enthusiasts alike.

Diverse Ecosystems and Flora

The park’s varied elevations give rise to distinct vegetation zones:

  • Montane Forests: These lush forests are home to towering trees like Elgon teak and African cherry. They provide shelter to various primate species, including the black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys

  • Bamboo Zones: Between 2,500 and 3,000 meters, dense bamboo thickets thrive, supporting wildlife such as the mountain duiker and serving as a vital water catchment area.

  • Moorland and Afro-Alpine Vegetation: Above 3,000 meters, the landscape transitions to heath and moorland, featuring unique plant species like giant lobelias and groundsels.

 Rich Wildlife

Mount Elgon National Park is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts:

  • Mammals: The lower slopes are frequented by elephants, buffaloes, and various antelope species. Higher elevations are home to forest duikers, bushbucks, and the elusive leopard

  • Birdlife: With over 300 recorded species, the park is a birdwatcher’s paradise. Notable species include the endangered Lammergeier (bearded vulture), Jackson’s francolin, and the Tacazze sunbird.

  • Invertebrates: The park also hosts unique invertebrates, such as Maathai’s longleg, an endangered dragonfly named after Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai.

Attractions and Activities

Mount Elgon offers a plethora of activities for every traveler:

  • Hiking and Trekking: The park boasts several trails suitable for all levels. The Sasa Trail is popular for those seeking a multi-day hike, while shorter trails like the Chebonet Falls Trail offer scenic views and waterfalls.

  • Cave Exploration: Discover the famous Kitum Cave, known for its salt deposits that attract elephants and other wildlife. Other caves include Chepnyali, Kapkwai, and Mude Caves, each offering unique experiences.
