Discover Lake Mburo National Park: Uganda’s Hidden Safari Gem
At Ikiya Primate Safaris, our mission is to take travelers beyond the usual—to explore the soul of East Africa in its most intimate and authentic form. While Uganda is renowned for its mountain gorillas and misty highlands, Lake Mburo National Park offers something equally remarkable: a serene, compact wildlife haven rich in biodiversity, scenic beauty, and exceptional safari experiences.
Located just a four-hour drive from Kampala, Lake Mburo is the most accessible savannah park in Uganda. It’s the perfect stopover between Entebbe/Kampala and Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Queen Elizabeth National Park. But don’t let its size fool you—what it lacks in acreage, it more than makes up for in charm, wildlife variety, and activities.
A Unique Ecosystem of Rolling Hills and Wetlands
Covering just 370 square kilometers, Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks—but also one of the most ecologically diverse. The landscape is a mosaic of acacia woodland, open grassland, seasonal wetlands, rocky outcrops, and five lakes, with Lake Mburo being the largest and central to the park’s identity.
Because it lies in a transitional zone between tropical forest and open savannah, the park hosts a mix of animal and bird species found nowhere else in Uganda. It’s also free of elephants, which allows for unrestricted bushwalking—a rare opportunity in African parks.
At Ikiya Primate Safaris, we believe in slow, immersive travel, and Lake Mburo is the perfect destination for exactly that
Wildlife Viewing: Zebras, Elands, and More
Lake Mburo is one of the best places in Uganda to view plains game—some of which are rarely seen elsewhere in the country. You won’t find the Big Five here, but you will enjoy up-close encounters with species unique to this landscape.
Highlights include:
Burchell’s zebra – Abundant here, yet absent from other parks in western Uganda.
Eland – The world’s largest antelope, and only found here and in Kidepo.
Impala – The park is the only place in Uganda where this graceful antelope occurs naturally.
Topi, bushbuck, warthogs, buffalo, and hippos
Leopards – Elusive but present, best spotted during night game drives.
Because of its relatively low predator population, herbivores thrive, making this park a wonderful location for photography and relaxed game viewing
Birdwatcher’s Paradise
For bird enthusiasts, Lake Mburo is a dream come true. The park boasts over 350 bird species, with habitats ranging from woodland to papyrus swamp, grassland, and lake shore.
Key species include:
African finfoot – Rare and localized, often spotted along lake margins
Shoebill stork – Occasionally sighted in the swampy areas
Red-faced barbet – A species confined to Lake Mburo in Uganda
Papyrus gonolek, grey-crowned crane, black-collared barbet, and rufous-bellied heron
At Ikiya Primate Safaris, we arrange guided birding walks and boat trips, tailored to beginner or expert birders alike
Unforgettable Activities
What sets Lake Mburo apart is the range of immersive activities allowed here—most of which are not permitted in other Ugandan parks. This makes your time here not just a safari, but an interactive nature experience.
Walking Safaris
Guided nature walks allow you to track animals on foot with a ranger—an exhilarating experience. Walks typically start early morning when wildlife is most active. You might find zebras grazing, buffalo watching cautiously, or hyena prints in the sand.
Horseback Safaris
Unique to Lake Mburo, horseback safaris offer a non-intrusive way to approach wildlife. Without the sound of engines, animals are more relaxed—making for close and peaceful sightings.
Boat Cruises on Lake Mburo
Enjoy a scenic boat ride to observe hippos, crocodiles, waterbirds, and even the occasional buffalo cooling off by the shore. This is a birdwatcher’s delight and a peaceful way to see wildlife from a new perspective.
Mountain Biking
Cycle through the park’s trails with an armed guide. It’s an adventurous and eco-friendly way to explore the savannah.
Night Game Drives
Search for nocturnal species like bush babies, genets, porcupines, and perhaps even a shy leopard
