Lake Manyara National Park: Tanzania’s Best-Kept Secre

At Ikiya Primate Safaris, our journeys are crafted with a deep love for Africa’s wild heart—and one destination that never ceases to amaze us, and our guests, is Lake Manyara National Park. Often overshadowed by its more famous neighbors like Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara is Tanzania’s underrated gem, brimming with wildlife, lush scenery, and soul-stirring biodiversity.

Nestled at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, this compact but diverse park offers an incredibly rich safari experience in a relatively small area. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, Lake Manyara offers moments of surprise, serenity, and sheer natural beauty—all of which we at Ikiya Primate Safaris are proud to help you explore.

A Park Born of Water and Wonder

Lake Manyara National Park was established in 1960, and its centerpiece is the alkaline Lake Manyara, which covers nearly two-thirds of the park’s 330 square kilometers. This shallow soda lake expands and contracts with the seasons, attracting thousands of flamingos and other migratory birds. Surrounding it are diverse habitats, including groundwater forests, open grasslands, hot springs, acacia woodland, and the dramatic backdrop of the Rift Valley wall.

Because of its rich mosaic of ecosystems within such a compact area, Lake Manyara is sometimes called “a miniature Serengeti”—but to us, it’s much more than that. It’s a park of detail, color, and contrasts. A place where elephants emerge silently from fig trees, hippos lounge in cooling pools, and rare birds flash across the canopy

Wildlife Encounters: From Tree-Climbing Lions to Elephant Herds

Lake Manyara is home to an incredible variety of wildlife, especially for a park of its size. While it may not rival the Serengeti in scale, it offers intimate and rewarding game-viewing experiences. Some of the animal highlights include:

  • Tree-climbing lions – Perhaps the park’s most famous residents, these unique lions are often seen lounging in the branches of acacia trees, a behavior not common elsewhere.

  • Large elephant populations – Manyara’s thick groundwater forest shelters some of Tanzania’s largest elephants, often seen up close in small family groups.

  • Buffalo, wildebeest, and zebra – These grazers are found in the park’s grassy floodplains, alongside giraffes and warthogs.

  • Hippos and crocodiles – These aquatic giants are most commonly spotted in the park’s hippo pool and along the lake shore.

  • Leopards and hyenas – Though elusive, they are present and occasionally seen, particularly during early morning or evening drives.

At Ikiya Primate Safaris, we time our game drives for optimal wildlife viewing and minimal crowds, offering a safari that is both personal and thrilling

Birdwatcher’s Paradise

Lake Manyara is a world-class birding destination, with over 400 recorded species and one of the highest densities of birds per square kilometer in Africa. Whether you’re an expert birder or a curious beginner, the variety and vibrancy here are astonishing.

Key species include:

  • Lesser and greater flamingos

  • Pelicans, storks, and herons

  • African spoonbill

  • Silvery-cheeked hornbill

  • Malachite kingfisher

  • Crowned eagle

  • Grey-headed kingfisher

We offer specialized birding safaris at Lake Manyara, led by expert guides who can identify species by sight and sound and help you track down rarities in the park’s diverse habitats.
