Arusha National Park: A Gem of Northern Tanzania
Arusha National Park, though one of the smaller national parks in Tanzania, is a remarkably diverse and picturesque destination. Located just 25 kilometers (about 30 minutes’ drive) from Arusha city, it is often overlooked in favor of the larger Serengeti or Ngorongoro, but it offers a unique experience filled with lush landscapes, varied wildlife, and a range of exciting activities
History and Background
Arusha National Park was officially established in 1960, originally known as Ngurdoto Crater National Park. Over the years, it expanded to include the Momella Lakes and Mount Meru, Tanzania’s second-highest mountain at 4,566 meters (14,980 feet). This expansion brought together three distinct features: the Ngurdoto Crater (often referred to as a “mini Ngorongoro”), the alkaline Momella Lakes, and the forested slopes and alpine summit of Mount Meru.
The park has strong cultural and historical ties to the surrounding Meru and Maasai communities and has long been an important region for wildlife conservation. Its location between Mount Kilimanjaro and Mount Meru provides a stunning backdrop for nature enthusiasts.
Directions and Accessibility
Arusha National Park is one of the most accessible wildlife parks in Tanzania. It’s located in northern Tanzania and is a convenient stopover for travelers on their way to or from other parks in the Northern Safari Circuit, such as Tarangire, Lake Manyara, or Serengeti National Parks.
To get there:
By Road: From Arusha city, it’s about a 40-minute drive via the Moshi-Arusha road, with clear signage leading to the park gate.
By Air: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is the nearest major airport, approximately 60 km away, and offers domestic and international connections
Activities in Arusha National Park
Despite its smaller size (137 square kilometers), Arusha National Park offers a variety of unique activities rarely found in other Tanzanian parks.
Game Drives: Visitors can explore the park’s diverse habitats, from open savannah and forest to mountain regions. The park is home to several animal species, offering a satisfying wildlife-viewing experience.
Walking Safaris: Unlike most Tanzanian parks, walking safaris are popular here. Guided by an armed ranger, tourists can trek through the forest and grasslands, getting close to giraffes, zebras, and other wildlife on foot.
Canoeing on Momella Lakes: This is one of the few parks in Tanzania where canoeing is permitted. Guests can enjoy quiet paddles across the serene lakes, observing hippos and water birds from a safe distance.
Climbing Mount Meru: This challenging but rewarding climb takes about 3–4 days and offers stunning views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding plains. It’s also ideal for acclimatization before attempting Kilimanjaro.
Bird Watching: With over 400 bird species recorded, including flamingos, herons, and turacos, Arusha is a paradise for bird enthusiasts.
Photography and Picnicking: The beautiful scenery, especially at viewpoints such as the crater rim or mountain trails, makes for excellent photography. There are also designated picnic areas
Wildlife and Natural Features
Arusha National Park boasts a surprising range of wildlife for its size. While it doesn’t host the Big Five (only the buffalo is present), it’s home to:
Giraffes, which are particularly abundant and often seen in groups.
Zebras, warthogs, waterbucks, dik-diks, and baboons.
Black-and-white colobus monkeys, easily spotted in the forested areas, are a major attraction.
Hippos, found in and around the Momella Lakes.
Leopards and hyenas, though elusive, are occasionally sighted.
The park’s landscapes are just as impressive. The Ngurdoto Crater resembles a large, green amphitheater filled with wildlife, while the Momella Lakes shimmer in varying hues due to algae and mineral content. Mount Meru dominates the landscape and offers incredible vistas
Arusha National Park is a hidden gem that combines the thrill of wildlife viewing with unique outdoor activities and breathtaking scenery. Its proximity to Arusha city and Kilimanjaro Airport makes it an ideal destination for day trips, short stays, or as a prelude to longer northern circuit safaris. For those seeking a blend of adventure, nature, and tranquility, Arusha National Park is not to be missed
