A Unique Ecosystem of Rolling Hills and Wetlands

Covering just 370 square kilometers, Lake Mburo National Park is the smallest of Uganda’s savannah national parks—but also one of the most ecologically diverse. The landscape is a mosaic of acacia woodland, open grassland, seasonal wetlands, rocky outcrops, and five lakes, with Lake Mburo being the largest and central to the park’s identity.

Because it lies in a transitional zone between tropical forest and open savannah, the park hosts a mix of animal and bird species found nowhere else in Uganda. It’s also free of elephants, which allows for unrestricted bushwalking—a rare opportunity in African parks.

Lake Mburo is one of the best places in Uganda to view plains game—some of which are rarely seen elsewhere in the country. You won’t find the Big Five here, but you will enjoy up-close encounters with species unique to this landscape.

  • Burchell’s zebra – Abundant here, yet absent from other parks in western Uganda.

  • Eland – The world’s largest antelope, and only found here and in Kidepo.

  • Impala – The park is the only place in Uganda where this graceful antelope occurs naturally.

  • Topi, bushbuck, warthogs, buffalo, and hippos

  • Leopards – Elusive but present, best spotted during night game drives.

Because of its relatively low predator population, herbivores thrive, making this park a wonderful location for photography and relaxed game viewing

For bird enthusiasts, Lake Mburo is a dream come true. The park boasts over 350 bird species, with habitats ranging from woodland to papyrus swamp, grassland, and lake shore.

Key species include:

  • African finfoot – Rare and localized, often spotted along lake margins

  • Red-faced barbet – A species confined to Lake Mburo in Uganda

  • Papyrus gonolek, grey-crowned crane, black-collared barbet, and rufous-bellied heron
