6-Days Gorilla Adventure: Trek Both Mountain & Lowland Gorillas – Rwanda & DR Congo Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali, Rwanda – City Tour & Transfer to Volcanoes National Park
Your safari begins with a warm welcome at Kigali International Airport, followed by a short briefing from your guide. Embark on a Kigali city tour, visiting historical and cultural landmarks such as the Kigali Genocide Memorial, local markets, and artisan shops.
After lunch in Kigali, drive north through Rwanda’s stunning hills and farmlands toward Volcanoes National Park, home to the iconic mountain gorillas. Arrive at your lodge in the late afternoon, nestled at the base of the Virunga Mountains. Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 2: Mountain Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
Today is the highlight of your Rwandan leg—mountain gorilla trekking. After an early breakfast, head to the park headquarters for a pre-trek briefing and be assigned to one of the habituated gorilla families.
Accompanied by rangers and guides, hike through bamboo forests and volcanic slopes in search of the gorillas. Once found, enjoy a full hour observing them in their natural environment—watching them feed, groom, and interact.
After the trek, return to the lodge for a late lunch and well-deserved rest. Optional community visit in the evening to learn about local Rwandan culture.
Day 3: Transfer to Bukavu, DR Congo – Lake Kivu Shoreline Drive
After breakfast, begin your scenic journey south to Cyangugu, near the border with Bukavu in DR Congo. This full-day drive takes you along the shores of Lake Kivu, offering spectacular views of the lake, terraced hillsides, and fishing villages.
After clearing border formalities, cross into Bukavu, a bustling lakeside city near Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Check in at your hotel or eco-lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 4: Lowland Gorilla Trekking in Kahuzi-Biega National Park
Rise early and head to Kahuzi-Biega National Park, one of the last strongholds for the eastern lowland gorilla (Grauer’s gorilla)—the largest of the gorilla subspecies. After a briefing, set out with park rangers on your lowland gorilla trek.
The forest terrain is more open than that of the mountain gorillas, making for easier walking and unique photographic opportunities. Once you locate the gorilla group, spend an awe-inspiring hour watching their behavior up close.
Return to Bukavu for lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure or visit local markets and cultural centers.
Day 5: Optional Activities in Bukavu or Nature Walks in Kahuzi-Biega
Enjoy a more relaxed day with optional activities such as birdwatching, forest nature walks, or a visit to Tshivanga Visitor Center in the park to learn about conservation efforts. Alternatively, enjoy a cultural tour of Bukavu, visiting historical colonial sites and local craft markets.
Dinner and overnight at your lodge.
Day 6: Transfer to Kigali – Departure
After an early breakfast, depart for Kigali via Cyangugu border, enjoying a scenic return journey through Rwanda’s rolling countryside. Depending on your flight time, stop for lunch and shopping in Kigali before drop-off at Kigali International Airport, marking the end of your unforgettable primate safari.
This 6-day safari is perfect for adventurous travelers seeking rare wildlife encounters and a deep dive into the diverse landscapes and cultures of Central Africa
