1 Day Ziwa Rhino Tracking

1 Day Ziwa Rhino Tracking trip  offers a rare and unforgettable opportunity to track wild rhinos on foot in Uganda—the only place in the country where this is possible. Located about 170 kilometers north of Kampala on the route to Murchison Falls National Park, the sanctuary is home to over 30 southern white rhinos, reintroduced as part of a vital conservation effort to restore rhinos to Uganda after their extinction in the 1980s

1 Day Ziwa Rhino Tracking Safari Details

The experience typically begins with an early morning departure from Kampala or Entebbe, arriving at the sanctuary by mid-morning. After a short briefing from one of the sanctuary’s rangers, visitors set off on foot into the bush. Accompanied by experienced and armed rangers, the walk is both safe and exhilarating. The terrain is mostly flat and easy to navigate, with plenty of chances to spot birds, antelope, and other wildlife along the way.

Tracking the rhinos involves following fresh footprints and dung, as well as listening to radio updates from other rangers in the field. Once a group of rhinos is located, guests are allowed to observe them from a safe distance—usually around 6 to 10 meters. Watching these massive animals in their natural habitat, grazing peacefully or caring for their calves, is a powerful and humbling experience.

Beyond the rhinos, the sanctuary is also a haven for bird lovers, boasting over 300 bird species, including the rare shoebill stork in nearby Lugogo Swamp. Depending on timing, visitors may have the chance to enjoy a guided birding walk or explore some of the sanctuary’s walking trails.

Other highlights include learning about the sanctuary’s conservation mission, community involvement, and the broader goal of eventually reintroducing rhinos into Uganda’s national parks. The guides are passionate and knowledgeable, often sharing inspiring stories about individual rhinos and the challenges of protecting them.

After a rewarding few hours in the bush, guests enjoy lunch at the sanctuary’s onsite restaurant before beginning the journey back. A day at Ziwa is not just about wildlife viewing—it’s about hope, protection, and the power of conservation in action.
