A one-day trip to Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary offers an intimate and inspiring wildlife experience just a short boat ride from Uganda’s bustling capital. Nestled on Lake Victoria, Ngamba Island is home to over 50 rescued orphaned chimpanzees and is a leading center for chimpanzee care and conservation in East Africa.

The journey typically begins in the morning from Entebbe, where visitors check in at the pier on Lake Victoria. From there, a speedboat or traditional motorized canoe takes you on a scenic 45-minute ride across Africa’s largest lake. As the mainland fades into the distance, the peaceful rhythm of the water sets the tone for a day of connection with nature.

Upon arrival at the sanctuary, guests are welcomed with a short orientation about the island’s mission, history, and the stories of the resident chimps. Ngamba Island, spanning 100 acres, provides a safe, forested environment where chimpanzees roam, play, and interact freely under the watchful care of trained staff.

The highlight of the visit is the chimpanzee feeding session, viewed from a special raised platform. This is when the chimps emerge from the forest to receive fruits and vegetables from their caretakers. It’s a fascinating opportunity to observe their personalities, social structure, and communication. Some are playful, others dominant or shy—but all are captivating.

In addition to the feeding, visitors can explore the education center, walk along the lakeshore, spot monitor lizards, otters, or birds, and learn about conservation efforts to protect wild chimps across Uganda and Africa.
